God Hates Nerds: Your Friendly Salvation Reminder

Turns out geekiness is so not next to Godliness, or so says the Westboro Baptist Church.

The church will be protesting outside of this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego next week in an attempt to stop the nation’s nerds from worshiping superheros. (Because that’s what we do, apparently.) Led by Reverend Fred Phelps, the congregation will gather to collectively point out our sins for a whole 45 minutes on Thursday afternoon. From 1:15 to 2 p.m., the group will be outside to remind us all to repent of our comic sins.

“Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here,” Phelps posted on the WBC site. “They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent – so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry.”

Right. Because C.S. Lewis never wrote Mere Christianity and Charles Schulz teaching Sunday school and writing Bible-themed comics was all a huge hoax. Quick, someone get this guy a copy of The Comic Book Bible and a hug from Felicia Day.
