Hold your horses: Dick Costolo, Twitter’s chief operating offer, has become Twitter’s CEO.

The new CEO, Costolo, is a former Google executive and Feedburner CEO. He was brought onto the Twitter team by former Twitter CEO Evan Williams himself, who says that he thought Costolo would be a “strong compliment” to himself. “During his year at Twitter, he has been a critical leader in devising and executing our revenue efforts, while simultaneously and effectively making the trains run on time in the office,” Williams wrote on Twitter’s official blog.

Evan Williams, who previously held the post, said he will be stepping down to focus on product strategy.  “The challenges of growing an organization so quickly are numerous. Growing big is not success, in itself,” Williams wrote.

In an email to Mercury  News, Costolo wrote that he’s looking forward to the new role. “”You couldn’t ask to take a job like this at a better time — the team is incredible, we have awesome stuff in the pipeline, and we’re ready to accomplish more in the next two years than we’ve accomplished in the last four,” the website reports Costolo told them in an email.
