App of the Week: Xfinity TV

Recently released for iPad and iPhone, Comcast’s free Xfinity TV app allows you to browse TV listings and schedule remote recordings directly from your device. The real kicker is the ability to use your iPhone or iPad to change the channels on your cable box, though.

Setup entails entering your Comcast.com account credentials in the app and pairing it with your cable box over a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. Aside from simply changing channels, you can use the app to pull up On Demand programs on your TV as well. (More on Techland: Gallery: Hits and Misses from Apple So Far)

It’d be nice to eventually be able to stream live, recorded, and On Demand content directly to an iPhone or iPad. Comcast’s new Xfinity.TV website allows for similar types of streaming, so hopefully we’ll see such features make their way to handheld devices sooner or later.
