World of Warcraft: Cataclysm has become the world’s fastest selling PC game of all time, according to Blizzard Entertainment.

“We had to bring Azeroth to the brink of destruction in Cataclysm, but the result was our best expansion yet,” CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment Mike Morhaime said. “We want to thank all of our new, existing, and returning players throughout the world for their incredible enthusiasm and support, and we look forward to hearing what they think about all the new content.”

As of October 2010, the game has 12 million subscribers worldwide so the fact that over one-fourth of them are upgrading to the next level within 24-hours of the expansion’s release means a lot. It also helps that the game has been getting some high profile press in recent years, including a memorable South Park episode dedicated to the addicted players, webshows like The Guild and commercials featuring celebrities like William Shatner and Mr. T. Or this French ad featuring Jean Claude Van Damme. (Check the replies on You Tube for the translation. It’s worth it.)

Now that it’s becoming cooler to play the game, do you think more people are willing to admit they have an account?
