If you live in California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New York or Texas, then congratulations: Your state is among the six responsible for almost half of all suspected cases of software piracy in the US, according to the Business Software Alliance.

The BSA says those six states are behind 49.3% of all piracy reported to its nopiracy.org website and 1-888-NO-PIRACY hotline in 2010. Five of those states have kept their place on the list since 2007, but Michigan can feel accomplished – or ashamed – to have earned a place there for the first time, knocking Ohio down the ladder.

Jodie Kelley, the BSA’s VP of Anti-Piracy, said about the list,

On the one hand, it is not surprising that the six states where we are seeing the most corporate software piracy are all among the largest in the country, but the trend underscores how prevalent these harmful copyright violations are throughout the US economy.

To the other 44 states: Congratulations on not making the list. But don’t think we’re not keeping our eyes on you–there’s always next year to make the BSA’s wall of shame.
