Hot on the heels of Lenovo’s leaked Honeycomb tablet, Sony has announced two versions of their own. The S1 and S2 don’t look all of those other tablets rolling off the assembly machine these days – the S2 even has a dual screen.
The S1 follows the traditional slate form factor with a 9.4-inch screen. CrunchGear expects the device will run on a Tegra 2 chip, which means it should have plenty of hardware chops to get the HD deed done. It’s also got an IR port for AV control and should seamlessly function well as a universal remote for Sony’s Bravia line.
And now for the interesting one that likely caught your eye. Sony’s S2 is unique in as it has two 5.5-inch screens, a first that we’ve seen on a device like this. Sony mentions that the screens can be used together, or alternatively as a “monitor-and-keyboard format.” In this latter format, the bottom screen can be used to control the top screen, which displays the content.
Both tablets are slated to come with Sony’s Qriocity store, which offers music and video downloads, pre-installed on the device. There’s also the Reader Store for e-books, and the PlayStation Suite if you want to play some old school PlayStation games (nothing wrong with some Crash Bandicoot every now and then…)
They will be both equipped Wi-Fi, as well as being compatible with 3G and 4G. Other than those details, there’s not much else known about them. Sony hasn’t said when the two devices will be let out loose in the world yet, or for how much (we expect it to be somewhat pricey) they will end up retailing for.
