Kitchen-Friendly Tablet Apps That You Don’t Need to Touch

Did I tell you about the time I got tomato pasta sauce all over some Angry Birds? Or the time I managed to rub a tiny dribble of sticky honey on to my Facebook wall? That took a lot of cleaning.

The great thing about the iPad is that it’s such a good kitchen computer. And the problem with the iPad is that kitchens are full of food, and spills, and water, and mess.

You want your iPad there with you, but you also want it far away, in another room, wrapped in a protective case.

The answer, of course, is kitchen apps you don’t have to actually touch. Start ’em up, prop them on a convenient stand (not too close to the sink or the stove) and after that – well, just wave at them.

That’s the secret behind Gilt Taste’s upcoming iPad app, currently in development, which is controlled by gestures you make in thin air that are registered using the iPad 2’s camera. Wave your arms one way to move on to the next step, or another way to go back. Wiggle your hips to do in-app purchases. Shimmy across to the refrigerator to send email. Or something like that.

Motion control is one solution to this problem; the other is plain old yelling. The iCookbook app, for instance, responds to voice commands, so you can get your hands as messy as you like and just shout your instructions from one side of the room to the other.

The world needs more apps you can shout at. Ideal for watching reality TV.
