RIAA Starts Going After Cloud Storage Sites?

With its lawsuit against LimeWire successfully settled, the Recording Industry Association of America has set its legal sights on another foe in the world of internet filesharing, filing against Box.net, a six-year-old company offering cloud storage to users.

Officially, according to an RIAA spokesperson, it’s not a lawsuit just yet; it’s actually “just” a 512(h) subpoena as part of a routine pre-release investigation, and that it’s “too soon to tell what we might do with the information once it’s uncovered.” Although, let’s face it, it’s unlikely that the RIAA would call each discovered user to personally thank them for listening to music in these busy times.

Responding to the subpoena, Box.net released the following statement:

We take the confidentiality of our customers’ information very seriously, but just like all other businesses, we are legally required to comply with court orders. Our compliance will be limited to the information the court requires we produce.

Consider this the opening salvo in what is likely to be a lengthy, and at times ridiculous, legal war.
