Watch: The Best ‘No Texting in the Movie Theater’ PSA Ever

This past Sunday I saw X-Men: First Class. It was OK. I don’t want to spoil too much, but during one of the movie’s key stretches – when a certain broody mutant with magnetic powers sobs on the shoulder of his telepathic BFF – a guy sitting in front of me (with his young daughter, no less) picked up his ringing phone and started chatting.

Of course, this led to a bunch of hisses and shhhh’s, but it still amazes me how in 2011 – TWO THOUSAND ELEVEN – there are still people out there who don’t have a handle on movie theater decorum.

To help frame this problem, the first motion picture projected in the United States took place in 1896 – well over a century ago. AT&T, on the other hand, first submitted a cellphone prototype to the FCC in 1971. I won’t walk you through my math, but that’s about five billion years we’ve had to get movie theater etiquette right (more or less).

The Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas, takes texting and talking during movies very seriously. The short of it is that if you’re caught talking or texting during a movie, you’re outta there.

Apparently, this perfectly reasonable policy incensed one angry customer – who had been warned multiple times to stop texting during the film – to call the theater and leave an angry, F-bomb laden voicemail.

But the Alamo Drafthouse – bless their hearts – decided to take the whole thing in stride, spinning her rant (posted above) into a friendly PSA reminding moviegoers to keep their phones at bay. Adorable.
