Google’s gone America’s Next Top Model and given Gmail a new makeover. The only difference? There will be no stick-thin girls crying about their new hair bob.

Gmail won’t be the only Google service getting a redesign: it’s also slated to hit Google Calendar as well. It is all part of a “Google-wide effort” to focus all of Google’s products cohesively in terms of aesthetics. Whatever that means. Even though I’m the one who wrote that. I think it means they are all gonna look the same, or similar. I think.

If you want to get a taste for what’s in store, there are two new themes in Gmail settings. The two rather clean and modern themes, called “Preview (Dense)” and “Preview,” are to give Gmail users a sneak peek into what’s in store. Why two themes? Google says, “Our new interface will eventually expand dynamically to accommodate different screen sizes and user preferences, but until then you can pick the information density that you prefer.”

The redesign won’t be in effect immediately, and Google says it’ll be rolling out the updates over the next few months. The Google Calendar updates will automatically update in the next few days if you haven’t gotten the new design already, but until then Google wants to “allow plenty of time to understand and incorporate your feedback into the evolving design.”
