If you’ve ever suspected that maybe, just perhaps, you’re not really doing social media right, here’s something that might reinforce that feeling for you: A man got a free steak dinner delivered to him as he disembarked a plane following a long flight, and all because of one cheeky tweet.
Social media consultant Peter Shankman—who has 100,00 Twitter followers—joked on Twitter as he was on a flight to Newark:
“Hey @Mortons – can you meet me at newark airport with a porterhouse when I land in two hours? K, thanks. :)”
When he landed, he was met by a stranger in a tuxedo, holding a sign with his name on it in one hand and a bag from Morton’s Steakhouse in the other.

“Alex, from Morton’s Hackensack walks up to me, introduces himself, and hands me a bag. He proceeds to tell me that he’d heard I was hungry, and inside is a 24 oz. Porterhouse steak, an order of Colossal Shrimp, a side of potatoes, one of Morton’s famous round things of bread, two napkins, and silverware.
He hands me the bag.
I. Was. Floored.”
This is really a win-win for everyone involved; Shankman gets a free steak, Morton’s gets the positive PR from the experience (like this post!) for the price of a steak dinner, and we all get to learn the benefits of asking for free things on Twitter. The only downside is that now that Morton’s has done this, it’s unlikely to be as valuable a PR tool for other restaurants.
Clearly, we’ll all have to up our game in order to maximize this opportunity. I’ll be back in a minute; I need to go and tweet DirecTV to ask them for some free channels to watch by the time I finish this post.
