Years Active: 2000 – 2010
Ah, Limewire. Your refusal to die even against incredible odds has made you something like the Keith Richards of P2Ps. Except he’s still kicking.
The wildly popular service shut down just last year after an injunction by the U.S. District Court made them suspend operations in October. The company’s legal woes, however, began in 2006 when the major record labels set their sights on the service, which at one point was estimated to be on every third PC worldwide.

Giga OM points out that though the service no longer works, interest in it is remarkably high: The website saw 1.1 million visitors in August according to Google Analytics and “still has excellent Google juice.”
Legends never go quietly. Maybe there’ll be a comeback.
