Google Maps for Android Adds Indoor Maps of Malls, Airports and Stores

Last weekend, I picked up an airport map, hopelessly lost and wandering around the terminals. If only I had the latest version of Google Maps (and data roaming, but I digress).

In an update to the application for Android, Google is unrolling a new indoor mapping feature that reveals floor plans for airports, shopping malls and other public spaces. It’ll determine not only where you are, but what floor you’re on and how to get where you want to go. According to Google, “Detailed floor plans [will] automatically appear when you’re viewing the map and zoomed-in on a building where indoor map data is available.”

The feature seems to only be available in select locations in the U.S. and Japan, including:

  • Mall of America, IKEA, The Home Depot, select Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, Daimaru, Takashimaya and Mitsukoshi locations and more.
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Chicago O’Hare (ORD), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Narita International (NRT), among others.
  • JR and Tokyu Corporation

The update works for Android 2.1+ devices everywhere, but let’s plan not to get “lost” at LAX anytime soon, just to be on the safe side.
