Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, Samsung’s Galaxy S III is rumored to be one of the world’s thinnest smartphones when it launches in May.

According to South Korea’s Electronic Times News (via BGR), the Galaxy S III will measure 7 mm thick, or roughly 0.275 inches. That would be a hair thinner than Motorola’s 7.1 mm Droid Razr, but not quite as thin as Huawei’s 6.68 mm Ascend P1 S. The Ascend, however, doesn’t support 4G LTE, which tends to add some thickness to the frame. Samsung’s Galaxy S III almost certainly will. (For what it’s worth, all these companies fib on their thinness claims, as the phones have protruding camera lenses and a hump to store bulkier components.)

The other rumored specs, which we’ve heard about before, include a quad-core processor, a 720p Super AMOLED Plus display, either an 8-megapixel or a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera and 2 GB of RAM. The phone will likely run Android 4.0, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich, though I’m guessing it’ll have Samsung’s TouchWiz interface on top.

Samsung has said that it will not demo the Galaxy S III at Mobile World Congress, a major conference for phones and tablets that takes place later this month. Instead, the company is going to have its own debut event closer to launch — sometime in the first half of this year. The Galaxy S is Samsung’s flagship smartphone line, and a separate event means the company won’t have to compete for media attention during a busy conference.

Hopefully this time around, U.S. wireless carriers don’t take a half a year to get the latest Galaxy S phone on their store shelves.
