The 3DS XL is basically a super-sized 3DS, but it also sports refinements that make it the better handheld, like: a smudge-resistant matte finish, improved buttons, curvier corners, an extra top-screen locked-in position for playing laptop-like on flat surfaces and of course the new screens themselves, each roughly a third bigger. Sure, the XL’s missing a second analog controller and the stereoscopic 3D effect still feels gimmicky, but if you’re looking for a mobile that’ll play two-screen games like Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus: Uprising or Resident Evil: Revelations, it’s officially the 3DS to beat.
