Facebook seems to be experiencing some sort of weird, partial site outage. Or maybe outage isn’t the right word — how about “fragmentary functionality fumble”?

The site itself remains accessible, or at least it does for me, but for reasons unknown, it’s throwing errors when you attempt to post a status update. Here’s what it kicked back when I tried:

Word on the street (that is, Reddit) is that the problem is site-wide, and that it’s preventing people from posting photos, sending messages, liking posts or commenting on them. I can verify all four of those things aren’t working for me, whether testing from my default Internet address or through a VPN server.

It’s hard to say just how global these issues are, but as Mashable notes, service-watcher Downrightnow shows Facebook as down for the past three hours (as of this posting); the cause: “likely service disruption.”

I’ll post updates here as soon as we know more, or Facebook says something.

Update: The problems have been resolved, according to Facebook, which issued a statement indicating the issues were related to a bit of routine maintenance gone awry:

Earlier this morning, while performing some network maintenance, we experienced an issue that prevented some users from posting to Facebook for a brief period of time. We resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100%. We’re sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused.
