SonyAs a computing category, “Ultrabooks” have always felt contrived—the term itself conjured up to give PC manufacturers standard specifications to compete with the MacBook Air’s slim, light, and quick features. And while many Windows-based contenders fall short of the Apple ultraportable, the Sony VAIO Pro line doesn’t shrink away in the least. With an array of prices and configurations, there are models (and prices) for just about any use case. The $1049 low-end, 11-inch VAIO Pro costs $50 more than its corresponding Air, but boasts a faster processor (1.6 GHz Intel Core i5), better pixel density, and goodies like NFC, an SD card slot, and HDMI output. On the high end, the 13-inch VAIO Pro weighs .62 pounds lighter than the best Air, while doubling its storage with a 512GB solid-state drive. But that achievement comes at a whopping cost — it’s $2,299 price tag weighs a grand more than the competition.
