This one snuck under radar: Bungie’s Destiny has a firm release date at last, and that date would be September 9, 2014.
The company announced as much not in a PR blast, but a chest-thumping blog post early this afternoon, adding that the beta will launch in summer 2014, as expected, on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 first per Sony’s timed exclusive.
“Destiny has always represented a new beginning for our team,” wrote Bungie’s DeeJ. “It was born from brave possibilities. We dreamed of a renewed and independent Bungie. We found partners willing to bet big on some crazy new ideas with us.”
Destiny, according to Bungie, is aiming to be much more than merely Halo-by-another-name. It’s billed as a hybrid multiplayer-slash-single-player shooter with roleplaying elements staged in a “mythic sci-fi” (see: science fantasy or space opera) sandbox, where the world’s supposed to be “alive” (whatever that means, though it puts me in mind of Bethesda’s claims about radiant A.I. in Oblivion).
The following game trailer isn’t new, but if you missed it in October, have a look at “The Moon.”
