Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 Android smartphone has been available unlocked for a while now, but the US version of the handset will be sold through AT&T at a subsidized price starting August 15th. The press release says it’ll cost $150 with a two-year contract at AT&T stores, while Sony’s website lists it at $130 when purchased from a Sony store.
The phone features a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 8.1-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, 8GB of built-in storage, and a 4-inch 854×480 display—not bad for a handset that was announced last November.
Sony Ericsson has promised to upgrade the Xperia X10 to Android 2.1 by Q4 of this year—the phone currently runs a heavily modified UI atop Android 1.6, which is a drawback given that most other smartphones in its class are already running 2.1 and being upgraded to 2.2 shortly. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sony Ericsson skip 2.1 and go straight to 2.2 instead.
