The FCC have yet another voice demanding to be heard when it comes to the proposed Comcast/NBC Universal merger: the Walt Disney Company. Disney VP of government relations, Susan Fox, spent part of Wednesday talking to staff members of FCC Commissioner Meredith Attwell Baker, to share her concerns about what the merger could mean for online VoD services.
The FCC has already been contacted by Netflix partner Level 3 over the merger, asking for enforced nondiscriminatory agreements with “internet backbone companies,” but according to the LA Times, Disney’s concern may be about the ownership it would give Comcast in Hulu, which is co-owned by NBC currently (Disney refused to go into specifics on what the meeting was about). Time Warner and Viacom are also said to be in discussions with the FCC over the merger, and the way in which it will affect online video.
A decision from the FCC on the merger is expected next week.
