Some of the biggest cable companies in America are being sued by a nearly-unknown company that claims that they’re all infringing on patents by offering VoD service. Pragmatus VOD has filed suit against Comcast, Cox, Charter, Cablevision, Time Warner, Advance/Newhouse and Bright House, claiming that each company’s VoD services infringe on two patents now owned by Pragmatus.
Interestingly enough, Pragmatus bought the patents from a company called Intellectual Ventures, which itself bought them from Image Telecommunications Corporation, which was originally granted the patents but auctioned them off for $3 million in 2007. Pragmatus was only created in June of last year, by two patent lawyers clearly hoping to hit the big time with this lawsuit.
