Just in time for Steve Jobs’ 56th birthday, Apple has rolled out new MacBook Pro models. There are two 13-inchers, two 15-inchers, and a lone 17-inch version. Prices run $1,200 to $2,500 before optional upgrades.
All models feature Intel’s new-ish Core i5 or i7 processors in dual- and quad-core flavors, four gigabytes of RAM, slot-loading DVD burners, new “Thunderbolt” input ports for 10 gigabit-per-second data transfer, and battery life rated at seven hours.
Each measures less than an inch thick, weighing 4.5 pounds, 5.6 pounds, and 6.6 pounds for the 13-, 15-, and 17-inch models, respectively.
On the low end, the base-level 13-inch model sports a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 dual-core processor, four gigabytes of RAM, 320-gigabyte hard drive, and Intel graphics for $1,200.
The big 17-inch version packs a 2.2GHz Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, four gigabytes of RAM, 750-gigabyte hard drive, and an AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics chip with one gigabyte of memory.
Optional upgrades include up to eight gigabytes of RAM, and 128-, 256- or 512-gigabyte solid state hard drives.
All in all, the new models haven’t been staggeringly overhauled compared to previous versions, though the newer processors and slightly lower weight ought to be enough to entice a fair number of people to upgrade.
