The 10.1-inch Asus Eee Transformer tablet will be making its way to the U.S. soon, and if recently uncovered accidental product listings on both BestBuy.com and Newegg.com turn out to be legit—both sites have since taken the listings down—the Android tablet’s starting price will be $400.
Asus is perhaps best known as the company that started the netbook craze, and the Transformer tablet draws its name from the optional $150 keyboard and trackpad dock that’ll allow it to fold flat like a netbook.
As for the tablet’s specs, they’re especially impressive if the starting price will truly be $400. There’s a 10.1-inch IPS touchscreen with a 1280×800 resolution on board, Android 3.0 Honeycomb, Nvidia Tegra 2 processor (1GHz, dual-core), one gigabyte of RAM, 16- or 32-gigabyte storage options, front- and rear-facing cameras, and a microSD slot for memory expansion.
The optional dock provides a full keyboard and trackpad with Android-specific function keys, full SD card reader, and extends the tablet’s 9.5 hours of battery life to 16 hours.
Asus has taken to marketing the Eee Pad Transformer primarily on Facebook, so you can find out more information there.
There’s no firm launch date, although the company is running a giveaway contest on Facebook between today and April 15th, which may indicate a mid-month launch. If the 16-gigabyte version really sells for $400 as the Best Buy and Newegg listings had indicated before they were taken offline, Asus should be able to move plenty of these things.
