And all at once, the sound of an infinite number of ripped pants pockets could be heard around the world as Apple fans removed their wallets with total disregard for the square-shaped denim enclosures that had held them safely in place. Those poor brass rivets never even saw it coming.
Apple has just updated its all-in-one iMac line “with next generation quad-core processors, powerful new graphics, groundbreaking high-speed Thunderbolt I/O technology and a new FaceTime HD camera,” according to a company press release.
Pricing starts at $1,200 for the 21.5-inch model and tops out at $2,000 for the 27-inch model (before adding any custom upgrades).
All four available baseline configurations—two 21.5 inchers, two 27 inchers—ship with Intel Core i5 quad-core processors, standard, and both the higher-end 21.5-inch model and the higher-end 27-inch model can be outfitted with Intel Core i7 quad-core processors if you so desire.
The 21.5-inch LED-backlit screen packs a 1920×1080 resolution while the 27-inch version boasts a 2560×1440 resolution. All models ship with four gigabytes of RAM, which can be upgraded to 16 gigabytes. The $1,200 model sports a 500-gigabyte hard drive, while the other three have one-terabyte hard drives that can be upgraded to two terabytes or outfitted with a 256-gigabyte solid state drive instead.
As for graphics, all models ship with AMD Radeon HD chips—the highest-end model comes with one-gigabyte of video memory and can be configured with a two-gigabyte chip instead. The others come with 512-megabyte chips.
And as we saw with the latest line of MacBook Pro notebooks, these new iMacs now feature Intel’s new high-speed Thunderbolt connection ports for compatible external peripherals and displays. The 21.5-inch models feature a single Thunderbolt port, while the 27-inch models have two.
Last but not least, each model comes with a 720p FaceTime-compatible web cam just like the ones found on the new MacBook Pro models.
