When I first saw the trailer for The Sky Crawlers, a movie by Mamoru Oshii, the guy who made the cyberpunk classic Ghost in the Shell, I thought: eh, he’s gone in for some kind of historical deal about fighter pilots. Pretty, but come on! More ghosts! More shells! Dude only makes a movie about once every 5 years as it is.

This Clip from The Host Is Pretty Unbelievably Great
I don’t watch horror movies. But I do watch clips of the good bits from horror movies, when helpful sites like io9 post them. (I never know if that’s a zero or a letter o in there. Well, today it’s a letter o.) Yesterday they posted this clip from The Host. Just watch that first epic 40-second shot! I don’t understand why all movies …
True Incredible Star Wars Secrets from Carrie Fisher’s Memoir
I know that what you’re really excited about is finding out which one I like better, Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero World Tour. (It’s Rock Band 2.)
But as it happens I got an early copy of Carrie Fisher’s memoir Wishful Drinking, which is coming out in early December, and it’s actually pretty entertaining — it’s very sort of wry and …
The New Star Trek Trailer Is Online
I will not insult you by embedding a crappy version of it here. Go watch it on Apple.
My take: this trailer does not suck, but neither does it rule out the possibility of the movie sucking. I was pretty meh about the opening bit — if you want to show me that Kirk is some disaffected Rebel Without a Cause kind of guy, OK, yeah, I’m …
Omnibus Post: Ice And Fire; Wheel of Time; 2012; Watchmen
Numerous people have e-mailed me this Variety article about how HBO has greenlit the Songs of Ice and Fire mini-series. I thought this had already happened, a while back, but apparently it had been some other color light before. Now it’s green. Good stuff. My only complaint is that they didn’t call George R.R. Martin “The American …
Pixar’s Next Big Movie: Up
Did you know about this? I didn’t know about this.

(At the moment I can only embed YouTube videos. A higher-res version is here.)
I don’t want to think about how long it must have taken to render all those balloons.
Video Stuff: My Dark Elf Army Will Destroy You
I feel pandered to by this, but I cannot in all honesty say that I didn’t enjoy it. (This = the new Fanboy trailer.)
I felt a bit the same way about this. But I have in all honesty watched it three times.

A New Age Dawns; Also, New Half-Blood Prince Trailer
Today brings the dawning of what future blog historians will call the Second, or Silver, Age of Nerd World. We have transitioned to a new platform, WordPress, albeit ungracefully and unwillingly (apparently all the servers fell over on Friday, so they crash-upgraded, or crash-cross-graded depending on how you feel about WordPress). …
Ridley Scott to Make The Forever War
Finally somebody’s going to film this book. I’ve been whining “forever” about the absence of a Forever War movie. Now, according to Variety (by way of Ain’t It Cool), it’s in the works, with the redoubtable, apparently indestructible Ridley Scott directing.
The plot summary they give is typically lame and distorted, in the manner of …
This Is Totally How Movies Begin
Doesn’t this sound like it’s straight from the keyboard of some action sci-fi movie writer? Well it’s not. It’s real.
2008 TC3 was a meteoroid two to five meters in diameter that impacted Earth on October 7, 2008 at 02:46 UTC. It was discovered by an observer at the Catalina Sky Survey 1.5 meter telescope at Mount Lemmon north

Yesterday I Saw 26 Minutes of Watchmen
Director Zack Snyder is doing a kind of traveling road show, screening clips from Watchmen ‘cross the nation. Yesterday that road show traveled to the Warner Brothers screening room in Manhattan. The movie will be out in March, assuming Fox and Warner don’t sue each other back to the stone age before then, but I have now seen 26 minutes …
They’re Making a Sequel to Tron. Also to 300. It’s Not Called 301
According to Ain’t It Cool, there’s further evidence that a Tron sequel is actually happening. Apparently the costume designer for 300 and Watchmen is on board. Maybe Flynn will get trapped inside an iPod and have to escape from its restrictive DRM.
For nostalgia’s sake, here’s the trailer for the original.
Apparently some test …
