A New Age Dawns; Also, New Half-Blood Prince Trailer

Today brings the dawning of what future blog historians will call the Second, or Silver, Age of Nerd World. We have transitioned to a new platform, WordPress, albeit ungracefully and unwillingly (apparently all the servers fell over on Friday, so they crash-upgraded, or crash-cross-graded depending  on how you feel about WordPress). Also, I just discovered that a “double espresso” is not in fact the largest espresso you can order at Starbucks — you can actually get one with four shots — don’t ask me why I didn’t already know this, it’s complicated. But the upshot is that I am more caffeinated than I have ever been in my entire life right now.

Also, Time’s Best Inventions issue is almost closed, so I’m actually allowed to leave my office for short periods of time, though only between the hours of 2 and 4 AM.

To celebrate the dawning of this new era, here is the new international trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince:

(OK, WordPress is having issues with embedded video. Just click the damn link.)

Right at the end there you can see him about to go into his character from Extras:

Will Google’s Insanely-Fast Kansas City Network Shame U.S. ISPs?

Google’s highly-anticipated plan to build an ultra-fast city broadband network kicked into gear Monday with the search giant’s announcement that it will begin laying miles of fiber-optic cable across Kansas City, Kansas and neighboring Kansas City, Missouri. Google said it aims to create a new “high speed infrastructure” that will allow local citizens to enjoy data speeds 100 times the national average. Google’s goal? To show off its telecom engineering chops and showcase next-generation web-applications. Oh, and maybe shame the big national broadband providers into improving U.S. Internet service speed, which currently lags behind many other countries around the world.

I note most of the bloggers are also lower case run along identifiers, yet Joe Klein manages to get his login to look like Joe Klein. Are you embarassed? (Actually I am since I couldnt figure out how to get spaces are capitals in mine either).

It’s probably not WP that’s having issues with embedded vids, it’s a youtube phenomenon that’s been going on about a year (when I have to talk my dad through it, it’s a phenomenon.)

Best practice is to provide the embed and the link. If the embed fails, you’ve got backup.

Also, screw Cliff and his capital letter. Showy bastard.

I’m back, baby! Thanks for the tip, Anonymous!
