An Essay About the Future of Comics that Is Itself the Future of Comics

I saw this via the bloggy part of PvP. It’s a comic that explains and also shows some of the cool stuff people could (and, it argues, should) be doing with webcomics.

I love webcomics and don’t think they’re in any sense broken or in need of fixing. (I lost about 2 hours the other day reading the entire archive of XKCD,which is about as basic and un-animated as it gets.) It’s partly the constraints of the form that it make it great. But I guess to properly appreciate it we should at least be aware of the options we’re eschewing.

Yes, eschewing.

Review: Soulo Converts iPad into Karaoke Machine

Karaoke lovers typically fall into two categories: Those who enjoy it, and those whose arms have to be twisted to get up and sing in public. Enter Soulo, a software and microphone kit that can turn an iPad or other Apple device into a karaoke machine. It gives you instant karaoke in the privacy of your own home, or wherever you carry your Apple gadgets. That’s the idea, anyway.

A webcomic I just got turned onto is MSPaint Adventures. It’s run somewhat like one of those old text-only computer games, with readers putting in suggestions about what the characters should do next.

Despite the name, the comic includes quite a bit of animated sequences.

Plus it makes me laugh, which is what I usually look for.

I didn’t even watch. Flash? Really? That’s like making a youtube vid about what’s wrong with novels.

My partner and I have been creating our own version of “interactive” or at least, online telenovelas on our site. We’re using all Flash and starting to play with video, and we’re inspired by the old Creepshow treatment of illustration-turns-into-video. It’s called Dysfunction Junction.
