Every week we single out some comics that we can’t wait to get our hands on. This week it’s yet another Avengers lineup, a holy warrior, a beleaguered war journalist, the ultimate in X’s, and of course, zombies. We can’t let Newsweek and it’s geektastic Konami Code undead antics have all the fun. Come back later in the week for the legendary Panel of the Week as well as the most intelligent discourse on comics in all the land, Comic Book Club.

New Avengers #1
I mistakenly thought that last week’s Avengers Academy was the final relaunched Avengers titles. My bad. There is still the new New Avengers which has a bunch of characters from the old New Avengers plus The Thing I suppose. Oh, and I’m pretty sure that Marvel Boy in his goofy new black and white costume will be joining up. I’m not sure how he’ll fit in with this largely ‘street’ lineup but the relaunches have been good so far. Hopefully this will follow the trend.

Magdalena #2
No one was as surprised as I was at how good this relaunched Magdalena book is. If the creative team can keep heavy on the fighting demons and light on the Vatican politics this book might have a shot. The art of Nelson Blake isn’t hurting either. For sure, there will be some gratuitous swimsuit pages but after that he draws one hell of a Spear of Destiny.

DMZ #54
It hasn’t been very interesting watching Matty Roth go on the run in the northern reaches of the city. You might even say it’s been boring. Maybe that’s not the right word. Hopefully things will pick up this issue when he’s going to turn himself in for war crimes on the 59th street bridge. I hope he’s ready, there is ALWAYS traffic over there.

Ultimate X #3
Ultimate X has been a closer look into the Ultimate universe after it has been obliterated in the events of Ultimatum. I feel that Loeb painted himself into a corner and is now telling stories about Logan’s bastard and the faux witness protection program that Jean Grey has put herself in. I’m buying this book out of pure loyalty to Art Adams. His pages are gorgeous.

Walking Dead #73
Rick and his band of emotionally vacant followers started to show their true colors last issue when they hatched the plan to steal back the guns. It would be sad if the group turned on their new friends for no other reason than they just can’t trust anyone anymore. Sad for certain, but that’s just the kind of story that Kirkman likes to tell so I’ll be ready.
