Spider-Man’s Foe The Lizard Will Be Played By Rhys Ifans

Dr. Curt Connors might not have transformed into villainous The Lizard in the previous iterations of the Spider-Man movies, but he will be see in all his scaley glory in the rebooted franchise films. (More on Techland: Why The Spider-Man Movie Reboot Will Be Awesome)

Rhys Ifans will play The Lizard in the new movies, which is based off of Marc Webb’s Spider-Man, according to The Wrap. Despite rumors that Venom was coming back, sources close to the film say he will be absent from this film. Andrew Garfield from The Social Network and Emma Stone from Zombieland will be playing Peter Parker and Gwen Stacey respectively, with Mary Jane Watson yet to be announced.

Personally, Tobey Maguire looks exactly how I would expect Spider-Man to look like, but after the third movie, I agree that the franchise needs a new direction. (Sorry Sam Raimi!) Do you think that Spidey was in need of a complete reboot?

I was never a Tobey fan, and no matter how right he looks for the part, his attempt at Spiderman’s wit never came off well for me. Love Raimi, but the Spidey was in desperate need of an overhaul

Based on how Rhys looks I would have pegged him as The Vulture not The Lizard. Time will tell but I still think that Spider-Man is a hard sell on the big screen.

There’s quite a bit of latitude with Peter Parker but Mary Jane is a super model in the comics and so far no one has hired a model who looks close to being a super model (Attractive? Yes. Supermodel? No.).

Then there’s the difference between PP’s personality and Spider-Man’s personality. SM has to crack wise a lot in costume and there’s been little of that so far.

There’s usually a difference between how a movie looks like it will be and what it actually is by the time it hits the big screen (I didn’t think that Heath Ledger would be able to do a good Joker and I was REALLY wrong about that) so I’ll give this a shot but I think that there’s not that good of a shot that this iteration of Spider-Man will be much cooler than the last one (on the big screen).
