Kinect Makes Good on its Word, Outsells iPad

In the never ending battle of Microsoft versus Apple, score one point for the PC giant. Many consumers thought that Microsoft was making bold claims when they said the Kinect would outsell the iPad by moving over 1 million units in 28 days. Kinect sold that amount in about 1/3 of the time – just 10 days.

Apple seemed proud that their iPad outsold their iPhones, but Kinect’s momentum into the holiday season is a force to be reckoned with. Black Friday and Cyber Monday haven’t even hit yet, and Kinect is on pace to hit the 5 million units they hoped to sell by the end of the year. Variety reports that Microsoft is hoping to make the Xbox 360 more appealing to even the casual gamer, something that Nintendo has had the market on since they started selling the Wii. The 3D camera on the Kinect captures the player’s movement and motions, allowing the user to control the gameplay. Game titles for the Kinect are also $10 cheaper than the retail price of the average Xbox 360 game and closer to what Nintendo Wii games cost.

Though Kinect does have some competition from Sony’s answer: PlayStation Move. The motion sensing unit that connects to the PS3 sold 1.5 million units within the first month of release just across Europe, according to Bloomberg. Overall, Move has received more favorable reviews than the Kinect, but the Xbox 360 is a more popular gaming console, selling 44.6 million units worldwide to Playstation 3′s 41.6 million as of the end of September 2010.

that’s very impressive considering that there doesn’t seem to be a Kinect killer app game yet.

gotta agree there, I havent seen one game that looks like it even utilizes what they say kinect can do. In fact from what they have shown so far it dosnt look like kinect can do what they say it can. Its awesome to hear that they out sold the ipad so fast, I just hope kinect comes out with some promising software.

Whut? My novel game thingy will outsell your tablet computer thingy this month? WTF does that mean?

iPad = bread; Kinect = circuses

To REALLY screw things up, you need a computer.

I’m going to partner with the Girl Scouts this year.

WE WILL SELL MORE COOKIES THAN KINECTS!

Not boxes, just individual cookies. Then I’ll get everyone to write about how the GSA conquered Microsoft.

    I am an evil genius.

I agree. iPad vs. Kinect is a silly and pointless comparison. Kinect vs. PS Move and how they will both affect the Nintendo Wii. Now those comparisons make sense.

I think this is M$’s pathetic way of saying: ‘we’re still serious competitors!’….NOT. The Wii is still much more fun, don’t try to copy it. So much marketingmoney wasted and it sucks.

    As I have often say,
Apple is a good starter but a weak finisher.
Microsoft is a slow starter but strong finisher, which sometimes leading up for domination and obliteration over competitors.

Watch out iPhones, Windows Phone 7 is here.
Deja vu moment for Steve Jobs.

I don’t think that comparing one pointless thing you don’t need with another pointless thing you don’t need is silly at all.
