Nintendo and Playstation might be household names when it comes to gaming, but the graphics and portability of Apple’s iOS devices are making it a contender in the gaming market. It’s not cheap for developers, who have to pay a $99 licensing fee and a steep 25 percent in royalties after the first $5,000 in sales, but many are opting to create programs for the iPad and iPhone according to the Wall Street Journal. With over 125 million iOS capable devices, just 10 million short of the Nintendo DS, Apple products are quickly becoming a top handheld gaming device.
“Apple’s App Store is the most vibrant market for mobile gaming,” Epic co-founder Mark Rein says. “If you’re going to make a game for a mobile device, and you want to make the most money, you’re nuts not to make it for iOS.”
Epic recently released Infinity Blade, which has made $1.6 million in 4 days with over 300,000 users playing. The iOS’ high-end graphics, in this case Infinity Blade’s 3D images, makes it appealing to companies. Other 3D games recently converted from consoles for the iPad and iPhone range from shooters like Duke Nukem 3D to multiplayer games like Rockband Reloaded to classic board games like Monopoly, which all benefit from the enhanced visuals and the large playable interface.
