I bet this one is on the list:

Never post on facebook that you are going away on vacation – while your address is visible in a public arena…

I see this all the time and it never ceases to amaze me.

Thanks for posting. I didn’t even think about bragging about new things! Esp around the holidays…

received an unmasked phone call one morning.Recialled and discovered the call came from a nearby business. When I called and inquired about the phone call, I was told no one phoned from that extension. With proof that indeed someone had phoned from that number, I visited the place, spoke to the chief, and discovered that it could only be one of three people. Each person, including two men, denied phoning my number. Later, via Facebook, I discovered that one of these three people is a “Facebook friend” of a man who has insiduously harassed my family in the past. What did I do? I reported it to the police. Sometimes soldiers fall by their own sword.

You shouldn’t mistake facebook for the real world. Because with one decision of some facebook geek, your account is deleted and all your contacts, photos, etc. are gone: http://andreasmoser.wordpress.com/2010/09/11/life-after-facebook/

Come faccio a farmi capire?

With facebook, people often feel like they are just telling their friends. But stop and think. How many of those 100+ friends do you really know that well? Are there ways people who are not your friends can access your status? If you do many games or quizes on facebook, or even if only your friends play games on facebook, the answer to the second question is probably yes.

Never say “no” to a new friend? ;)

Facebook is a fascinating, new fora for discussion and it has made for excellent break room chat with the things that people do there.

It’s unbelievable how so many people still believe conversations on Facebook walls are private. Meantime, I’m always happy to share photos of trips when I return; I never update from the road and I don’t announce travel plans beforehand anymore.
There is a scam going around Facebook wherein a hacker poses as a user, then e-mails friends claiming to be stranded in Europe and needing money. I received one of those e-mails from someone who would never ask me for financial help (we’re friends, but not that close!), so I knew it was fake. People, beware out there! -Jen

I hate when people change their status every 5 minutes. Also, adding new pics everyday. That’s weird..like how do you have time to take your pictures all the time.

  • http://achilliad.wordpress.com achilliad

Yes, well you speak to something called “common sense” seems to be a vanishing trait over the past seventeen years or so. I am happy that your post is one of the remedies for this problem. Amusingly sad that people don’t use their brains or aren’t taught to “know better than to…”
    Kudos, FP-style!

  • http://sayitwithmusic.wordpress.com/ I Made You A Mixtape

I tell you what you should not be posting on FB… what you had for dinner, lunch or breakfast for that matter. That you are now off to a coffee break at work and it’s raining outside. Don’t take pics of food you’ve cooked, post all 2 billion holiday photos you took and most of all…keep the status updates to only one or two per day! :o) Other than that- yeah… I love FB….

  • http://elenamusic.wordpress.com elenamusic

Haha, I see those all the time, people hating their jobs, showing THEMSELVES underage drinking. I think the evidence that you cheated for divorces is smart (for the lawyers, not the one putting up evidence!).

And people go on FB while robbing a house??? Hah!

I always worry about the vacation updates. Maybe we need to make sure we’re not making friends with people we don’t know (or don’t trust)

I was just thinking about this the other day. My biggest pet peeve is when FB’ers talk trash about someone else via their status… hmmmm

  • http://garrettword.wordpress.com Garrett McKenna

R U kidding me???!!? I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that someone can be fired for venting about thier job or using profanity or posting a picture of themselves drinking a beer. If I want to I can spend my weekends setting kittens on fire and jaming them into the presiden’t mailbox if I want to. Who cares? What does that matter as long as I’m good at my job during the week. I think it should be illegal for employers to use anything on someone’s Facebook page against them.

All i know and care of is that all should be cautious of what is posted on the book of face cos it leaves an indelible make and one day the book you’ve written will face you.

Who needs ‘Facebook’. My real ‘friends’ know my e-mail address and phone numbers. Facebook ‘friends’ give you daily ‘spam’ to get rid off and much of nothing else. My real friends’ and family know how to contact me, who needs the bother and hassle of ‘Facebook’?

  • patriot1st

I’m considering dropping Face book since they now plan to make available to all your personal info. If I wanted everybody to know I would have posted it myself.
Think this is going to hurt Facebook in the long run.
Do they not respect our privacy?

I can’t believe somebody checked in while robbing a house…. people do that?? That’s just asking to get busted! I feel like some of these things are just obvious not to do unless you really feel like you need attention or an incredible amount of comments or something.

I monitor our young children’s & make them delete ‘friends’ who curse or talk about non-age appropiate things. Our adult children I deleted! The way they talk on there….. I know they have class in the right setting but if you read their post on FB…there is no way you would think they had an ounce! My husband, their father, wouldn’t hire them if he saw their FB beforehand. And we aren’t really prudish. For real, for real.

I just started on Facebook and haven’t met many people. It’s nice to read about people and things that I’m interested in. I’m not going to buy into all that fear about people learning private information about you.

MY LIFE IS NOT THAT INTERESTING.

  • http://rohitmaiya.wordpress.com rohitmaiya

Once my Orkut account was hacked. My pic was replaced, my details were re-written etc. I immediately deleted everything and updated my pic. I havent bothered to do add any other information and I dont miss it. I don’t really care if people are visiting my account or not.

I have reached a stage where, I dont really care for Orkut of Facebook but I don’t mind using it as it is a convenient way of keeping in touch. We have had 2 to 3 school, college, hostel get-together because of Facebook. I don’ think we would have ever met if not for facebok. So I do owe it a bit so I dont wish to talk dirty about it but yes it does not adversely affect my life if I choose to stay away from it.

I agree with some of the posts here. Facebook really needs to adjust their standards of privacy. That is if it is possible at all! My friend and I do not trust Facebook. I used to think that Facebook was fun since it helped me connect with old friends and distant family. But just like that post posted my real friends and family know my email address, etc.. so what does Facebook has to do with it?

How about people just thinking before posting, hey, it’s “Public” so should I not be careful about what I disclose. I am sure there’s a neat stat somewhere that says more often then not you are robbed by someone you know…I’d be interested in knowing how many divorses, break-ups and job losses FB has contributed to, is this stat public?

  • http://bookandbiscuit.wordpress.com Siobhan

Okay so there are some which are silly things to write (as in notifying burglars that you’ll be away) but others are down right immoral and illegal and surely shouldn’t be done at all- on facebook or not!

Garret McKenna: Seems to have lost his mind, about to lose his job and the worst thing yet, in trouble with PETA.

  • atmusfearik

The best thing about fb is you can reconnect with all those people that you never wanted to see again. If someone is so important in your life, go see them or give them a call or write a letter and send a few pics. I have enough ways to waste what little time I have and if fb deserves credit for anything its managing to become the biggest technical timewaster since the computer itself. Now, I am getting off of here because I too, am wasting my time, but felt it important to point out how you are doing the same thing. Now, lets all go do something constructive. Like build a fort.
