A Lot Of People Still Buy Playstation 2 Consoles

SONY

Sony released their quarterly financial results overnight, and while nothing is completely shocking, Gizmodo points out one interesting fact: Playstation 2 sales have stayed the same.

Normally this wouldn’t exactly be good news, but the fact that the console is 11 years old AND still managed to pull off six million units sold by quarter three of this year AND close the unit sales gap between it and the Playstation Portable is mighty impressive. Also, add the fact that the biggest title for the gaming device, God of War II came out four years ago. The console hit the 150 million units sold mark this year as well, making it one of the most successful gaming systems ever. Admit it: Who out there still uses their PS2?

I loved my PS2. I find myself frustrated that my PS3 can’t play the vast library of “old” games I have sitting around – “It just does everything” my ass – and will probably hook it up again at some point. There were some gems on that system, and it’s a great price point to get into gaming. Glad to see it’s still holding its own.

@thebonafortuna Yeah I still use mine too :)

I still use the PS2 a bit, usually for Guitar Hero or Final Fantasy. The rhythm gaming is slowly migrating to the Wii, but the PS2 will live on at my house thanks to my library of PS1 and PS2 RPGs.

Mine is still a PS2 house because with young kids we can’t afford the next generation systems. Sure, we could probably swing the console, but it doesn’t make sense unless we also upgrade the TV, cable, and DVR. Add to that the increased cost of software and peripherals and it’s just not high enough on our shopping priority list.

We have considered a Wii but the library hasn’t impressed us enough to make the plunge.

Guilty. It’s cuz there were so many great games developed for PS2, and I still haven’t managed to play through all of them yet. Thus, I’m still chugging along on my PS2 (even though I own a PS3 as well… but I use that more for Netflix streaming than game-playing…)

I purchased a PS2 in 2010, although it was used so I imagine it wouldn’t be included in these statistics. My old PS2 was broken but I still had all the games. Also, I have a PS3 which of course won’t play PS2 games. It seems kind of ridiculous to me to be buying another PS2 when I already have a PS3, but I guess in the end there were just a bunch of games that I really wanted to play again.

I have bought two PS2′s since they came out and successfully burned both out- an original and a slim (my slim burned out this last fall.)

I plan on buying a third PS2 before spring rolls around. Sometime after I get tired of playing Black Ops.
