Pound Puppies/Purries and ViewMaster - fine.  The rest of them - not so much.

Teddy Ruxpin does NOT need to be resurrected.  Teddy Ruxpin was EVIL.  And I say that as a parent during the '80s.

Furby's should never, EVER be recreated.

They were all possessed.

Seriously.

Get the vile spawn away from toys and make economic assets of the little heathens again.

Out with the intrusive anti-freedom child labor laws and place the spawn back into mines, factories and fields.

Jem's already getting a revamp. The first doll of new line was sold at Comic Con. It sold out by the second day. Several new She-Ra figures have been put out by Mattel.

Two minutes of internet research. Total.

re: Litebrite. I loved the pegs, but like other toys with "swallowable pieces" it needs an update for todays lawsuit-happy parents. I'd re-engineer it to use removeable LED's in the same shape as the original pegs, just make it idiot-proof. Also I always found punching paper full of holes to make it not reuseable, and the paper was responsible for the friction required to make the pegs stay put.

One I'd like to see redone is MASK. It was the toy line where a vehicle would change between 2 different modes. A motorcycle could turn to a helicopter, a car to a jet, etc. Some simply became more battle orientated by having armor come out and guns spring up. But they were cool. Now given the better molds you can make the vehicles a little more complex and detailed. Keep the overall concept simple.

For example one of the main vehicles was a Thunderbird (iirc) that turned into a plane. All it really did was have the doors be gull wings and the back end flipped down to show rockets. Why not make one where the driver's chair moves to the middle and the car collapses inward to make it more plane fuselage shaped and have wings sprout out the bottom. Jet engine still pops out the back. There same concept, but slightly more complex.

Time needs to take a look at Wired dot com to see how Show All is supposed to work.

NO.  Teddy Ruxpin and Furby are Hellspawn and should not be allowed to walk the Earth.

the toy the author would like to see teddy evolved into is already here. It's made by LeapFrog and is called My Pal Violet.

Obviously, the writers are not toymakers.  There is only so much technology can do for a toy.  Some of the ideas presented for updates takes away what made these toys classic to begin with.

All of these toys did fine without complex computer processors.  The most complicated piece of hardware was probably a voice box.  What made a lot of these toys great was that they stimulated imagination.  Something most modern day toys seem to lack.

Perhaps adding sounds, like the notes on a piano, to LiteBrite might make it function more like the representations in it's commercials.

That's all we need, people driving with these new viewmasters while texting at the same time. Hey! the text message could appear over the viewmaster image that appears over the "real world".

Hey! the text message's emotional content could influence the image in the moving image that is being superimposed over the real world.

Hey! Right after the massive 5 car accident caused by this reincarnated text messaging real world viewmaster, the accident victim could beg for a State Farm Insurance Agent to show up and undo the damage!

Hey bub, can you pass me a drink, I'm kind of getting thirsty in my virtual reality pod viewmaster station I was put in for not paying my real world viewmaster monthly memory bill.

A voice box was pretty complicated back then but don't forget, the Petster from Axlon actually has a microprocessor and that was in the 80s!

For a long time, toymakers were trying to make their dolls and bears talk.  Now we can make them do it more realistically, animated and responsive too. I don't see the problem. As a collector I still love the classics but new technology always keeps me hopeful for exciting new ideas.

And I bet you walked ten miles uphill through snow both ways to school too. For all the creativity the toys of yesteryear were supposed to encourage, not much of it seems to have stuck around.
