Today via its Docs Blog, Google announced plans to offer additional file storage space through Google Docs.
Instead of storing files (media, pdfs, photos, etc) in your email account, Google Docs users will be able to upload these files directly into their Docs account. (Hello, computer backup!) Says Google:
“Instead of emailing files to yourself, which is particularly difficult with large files, you can upload to Google Docs any file up to 250 MB. You’ll have 1 GB of free storage for files you don’t convert into one of the Google Docs formats (i.e. Google documents, spreadsheets, and presentations), and if you need more space, you can buy additional storage for $0.25 per GB per year.”
This is a great, functional improvement. Kudos, Google.
But, here’s the interesting bit: You’ll be able to include the media you upload into shared folders, just like you can a doc. Large-size photos, music files, anything can be accessed through shared folders. I’m imagining the residence hall music-sharing folders that will spring up once this feature becomes available “over the next few weeks.”
