Aliens vs. Predator versus Alien vs. Predator

Sega’s Aliens vs. Predator game comes out on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC next month. As a huge fan of the Alien and Predator franchises, I’m praying for a favorable outcome because it’s been a while since these classic sci-fi heavyweights have starred in a worthy vehicle (games or movies: take your pick). 1999’s Aliens vs. Predator (a PC shooter produced by Rebellion, the same guys who are working on Sega’s game) got the job done but the gold standard continues to be 1994’s Alien vs. Predator for the Atari Jaguar.

Just to be sure I’m not crazy, I dusted off my Jag, remembered what to do with an RF converter, and loaded up the cartridge. For a 15-year-old game, it holds up. Predictably, the mid-‘90s, 64-bit graphics and sound are bags of hurt, but this AvP still gives me a satisfying taste of what it’s like to wreak havoc as a Predator, Alien, and Colonial Marine.

We’ll see if Sega’s version can recapture some of this magic. From the looks of the latest trailer that came out today, you can tell Rebellion isn’t going to be stingy with the gore (Australia seems to agree). Label me cautiously-optimistic for this one. If it fails, I left my Jaguar system hooked up just in case.
