Again with all the #1 issues. I guess it’s a byproduct of the written-for-trade world we live in but my pull lists are always dripping with #1’s. Check back on Thursday to see if any of this first issue action made the cut for the Panel of the Week.

American Vampire #2
I loved the first issue of this book. There were enough familiar Vampire tropes to make it easy to get into despite the non-standard settings of the Old West and Roaring 20’s. Everyone out there that’s burned out on vamps because of franchises like “Twilight” and “Diaries” take heart. American Vampire is here for you, thanks in large part to artist Rafael Albuquerque.

Magdalena #1
She’s the female Snake Eyes of the Catholic Church. She’s a super Buffy. Unfortunately she was first seen during the outrageous T&A fad of the 90’s. I have various issues of Magdalena floating around my collection and I’m ready for some more. I never got tired of this character even if her plots and motivations were tiresome. Fingers crossed that we get to see more from the soldiers of the Inquisition. Yes, THAT inquisition.

Spirit #1
I’m ashamed to say that my first real introduction to The Spirit was the foul movie from a couple years ago. I couldn’t even finish watching it. I liked the character. I tend to like heroes that are only marginally super powered and get by on pure grit. With that hope in mind I’m going to gear up for this new series launch.

Ultimate Comics Avengers #6
My undying allegiance to the Ultimate imprint should really be called into question at this point. I don’t know why I’m still pushing chips into this pot. I can’t help it, I love Steve Rogers’ bastard son as the Red Skull. Even when junior is launching babies out of windows to remind us all that he is, in fact, the bad guy. In this issue Steve Rogers takes his stolen teleporting jet and joins the fight. Yes, Millar, pander to me.

X-Men Forever Annual #1
I’ll be picking this one up on the recommendation of Wolk. The love triangles of the X-Men have always been the least interesting plot points for me. Followed closely by the family tree of the Summers clan. However, Jean Grey getting loose with a hairy five foot nothing murderer has some merits I suppose. Let’s put it this way, the cyclops/grey/logan triangle is such a whopping bit of X-Men canon at this point that I WANT to care about this Annual. Congrats, you are this weeks “Issue Number One”.
