World Oceans Day: 5 Sci-Fi Waves I Want To Ride

Today is World Oceans Day, but given the current catastrophe going on in the Gulf thanks to BP, it’s not easy being so lighthearted about the situation and compiling a list of waves I’ve seen in sci-fi flicks that I’d love to surf. But I’m going to do it anyway.

Surfers have a thing about finding a bigger, faster wave to surf. I am not one of them. At least not now. I just about soil my boardshorts anytime I paddle out into anything bigger than double overhead. But then again, the biggest I’ve ever paddled out into was some gnarly double overhead stuff in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica.

Here are five Sci-Fi waves that would make anyone crap themselves. I’m sure I missed a few, so let me know in comments:

Who wouldn’t want to surf up 5th avenue? Except I’d need a 5/4/3 or heated vest from Quiksilver or maybe Rip Curl’s electric heater suit.

This has one too many obstacles including Tea Leoni. The music. I know. Don’t ask.

I don’t know how I’d feel about crushing a temple while surfing. But I’d probably die, so chock it up to karma.

Of all the Sci-Fi waves, the one in Carpenter’s Escape From LA is by far the best. Snake looks like such a dope.

It wasn’t until I saw the Director’s Cut of The Abyss that I realized a pretty killer wave had been left on the cutting room floor. It’s huge.

Also, you’d think it’d be easier to find the exact clip I need on YouTube but it’s not. Jump to the 4 minute mark and you’ll get a glimpse.
