Happy Monday! Here are some of today’s top tech links so far. We’ll cover a few of these throughout the day but feel free to get a head start.
Jam-packed CES draws more than 140,000 visitors to Vegas
Link: VentureBeat
T’was the busiest Consumer Electronics Show in recent memory, with VentureBeat reporting preliminary figures of over 140,000 attendees piling into the 3.2 million square foot Las Vegas Convention Center last week. I can tell you firsthand that it seemed to take noticeably longer to get from point A to point B than in years past. Last year, especially, felt downright empty.
Verizon Wireless Confident It’s Got Muscle for iPhone
Link: Wall Street Journal
The Verizon iPhone. It’s the collective unicorn, Sasquatch, Loch Ness Monster and Chupacabra of the tech world all rolled into one, and we may finally get a real-world sighting tomorrow. While little may be different on the surface as it goes head-to-head with the AT&T iPhone, there’ll be plenty going on under the hood; specifically whether Verizon’s network can handle hoards of new iPhone users all accessing its pipelines.
Tablets at CES 2011: Honeycomb, Windows 7, and all the rest
Link: Engadget
The Year of the Tablet. That’s how we’ll remember 2011. Engadget’s got a preliminary list of what’s here, what’s coming, and everything in between.
Facebook Wins Relatively Few Friends in Japan
Link: New York Times
Less than two percent of those online in Japan are on Facebook. Here in the U.S., we’re at 60 percent. It’s almost as if Japan has its own social networking sites that it prefers over Facebook. What gives, Japan?!
Tablets will kill netbook sales
Link: The Inquirer
Lenovo apparently believes that tablets will eventually take over the same market currently served by netbooks. I’d argue that netbooks will eventually morph into ultraportable notebooks with fewer compromises between price, form factor and performance. Either way, what we’ve conventionally thought of as "netbooks" may ultimately evolve or get eaten by tablets.
