Let’s face it: Your Twitter friends? Kind of boring. It’s not their fault. It’s just that everyone else you’ve discovered through Twitter has been — how to put this gently? — way more awesome.
That probably explains the strategic shift behind Twitter’s new homepage, starting to pop up for users across the Web. Twitter’s new philosophy directs Tweeters toward their “interests” and shifts the focus from initial descriptions of Twitter (really. slow. instant messaging.) to what it ought to be: A tool for instantaneous information circulation.
The new homepage tagline reads, “Instant updates from your friends, industry experts, favorite celebrities, and what’s happening around the world,” and features a scrolling bar for avatars of interest along the bottom.
Notice, too, that there’s a subtle world map in the navy-blue background. Perhaps it’s a mark of Twitter’s new, more mature focus. Or perhaps it’s just because Twitter’s made the world feel that much smaller.
Probably both.
