So you just bought the brand-new Droid 4 and you’re looking forward to your promised upgrade from Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The problem? You might be waiting for a long, long time.

Motorola has released a list of when people can expect Android 4.0 upgrades and, well, things don’t look good. In the United States, two phones—the Photon 4G and the Atrix 4G—are in “development,” meaning that their owners can expect upgrades in the third quarter of 2012.

But what about the big boys? Bad news: the Droid RAZR, Droid RAZR Maxx, Droid 3, Droid 4 and Droid Bionic are all in the “Evaluation & Planning” category. What does that mean?

Generally, we are not able to provide release dates in this stage. There are also some cases in which we can state that an upgrade will happen but are not able to provide a release date. Please note that some products that enter the Evaluation and Planning phase may not complete the upgrade cycle.

Translation: Um, you’ll get your upgrade … soon? Never? Who knows?

So far the only Motorola device to get an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade is the Wi-Fi-only Xoom tablet. This is certainly a disappointment for Motorola customers, who have to watch with envy as Samsung Galaxy Nexus owners swipe happily away on their Android 4.0 phones.

It also brings up the oft-mentioned fragmentation problem that Android faces, something iOS users don’t have to worry about.
