It can use tools, crawl through rugged terrain and locate objects with cameras and laser range finders. The Atlas robot is intended to imitate human rescuers in disaster response and emergency recovery, although for now it’s operating only in mock-up crises. Developed by Boston Dynamics with military funding, it will compete in DARPA’s robotics trials in December.
