Delivering Domino’s Pizza by Unmanned Helicopter: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

For those of you keeping score in the pizza gimmick wars, we currently have Pizza Hut letting you order pizza through your Xbox versus Domino's proof-of-concept DomiCopter.

Proving that it’ll try anything short of making tasty pizza in order to get you to buy its pizza, Domino’s has uploaded the above video to its U.K. and Republic of Ireland YouTube account.

The video’s caption: “See the latest delivery innovation from Domino’s. The DomiCopter – taking deliveries to new heights.”

As Pocket-lint posits, this seems like little more than a publicity stunt at the moment. At least it’s technically possible to have your pizza delivered through the air while attached to an unmanned drone-like whatsit. That’s what technology is all about: possibilities.

For those of you keeping score in the pizza gimmick wars, we currently have Pizza Hut letting you order pizza through your Xbox versus Domino’s proof-of-concept DomiCopter. If Papa John’s doesn’t launch some sort of satellite to drop pizza from low earth orbit, its business might be doomed.

Dear Dominos,

Learn to make a Pizza first then innovate on the delivery system.

Regards,

Its a cool way to deliver in an ideal world. All one has to do to get a pizza is not order one , but a throw a log at one of these helicopter passing by , voila you got yourself a free pizza .

Depending on the durability of this robot, this could be a great idea. If you think of the hourly rate a delivery driver makes plus the potential decrease in customers with the rising delivery costs ($3 where I live), this thing could pay for itself very quickly. Not knowing the price of this item or the hourly rate of a delivery driver, it is hard to say. If they are a full time employee making $10/hr, this thing pays for itself in a year assuming it costs less than to $20,800. I think the only way to impove this idea is to install a smart GPS unit so instead of controlling it via remote control, you punch in an address somewhat like a Garmin, and it takes itself to that location...have a return address programmed and once the pizza is removed from its arms..it returns to its original location.

It's cool idea but - helicopter can be damaged, stolen. People can be scared that this helicopter is doing some pictures (privacy). Not sure how this will handle bad weather. People can be scared that inside can be bomb.  There is probably few more reasons...

This idea could open up amazing uses for this device. Imagine putting a camera on it and having it be able to deliver important papers or something else that needs to get across town in 10 minutes rather than 2-3 hours!

Now, if they could just get the pizza right!

I think this is actually cool! A pretty neat publicity stunt. Unfortunately  I'm not really sure that you'd want to put this thing in the hands of a 16 year old who is just working for gas money. I know when I was 16? Yeah, this thing wouldn't make it through a weekend.

part of the article title says "What could possibly go wrong?" well . . if the drone or drone op uses apple maps to navigate =)

They show this traveling beyond line-of-sight but they don't have any first-person-view video gear on it. So it's fake in terms of being a single flight from A to B accomplishing a delivery.

@leslie7878 You don't have to have FPV to do this. For years there have been drones that fly to a gps coordinate and return unassisted!

So if a Taliban chief in North Waziristan gets my order for a Deep Pan Margherita - what are they sending to my house?

Can't hackers mis-direct the helicopters to their residences and rob the pizza?. Remember Iranians brought down a drone sent by USA.

Yes, but can it make change for a $50?

Why not cook the pizza while enroute?  Why not have the copter make the pizza dough, doing whirly birds to stretch it out. Why not, for a few bucks more, perform the entire pizza creation above the pizza orderer's home?  They can grab a brew and watch their pizza being made in the sky right above their own home.

This has to be one of the coolest things I've seen for a while!
