(Readers’ choice) Many people think of New York City as a cold, scary place where people pass each other on the street without saying a word. With Humans of New York, photographer Brandon Stanton set out to change that reputation. The idea is as simple as it sounds: photographs of human beings in New York City accompanied with a quote, anecdote or comment by the photographer. Stanton, a former bond trader in Chicago, has taken nearly 5,000 portraits and written 50 stories according to his website. He’s also taken the project to Iran and will soon publish a Humans of New York book.
