SonosWireless speakers have proliferated at an astounding rate in recent years, but few companies—if any—have been working on the technology as long as Sonos. The company has been at it since 2002, and with the new Sonos Play:1, the technology has been taken to a smaller, less expensive, and more accessible level. Sonos sets its speakers apart from the competition by broadcasting on its own wireless network—which means no dropouts or interference. Play:1 is a perfect entry-level speaker for new Sonos users because it can connect to Internet routers via Ethernet, in turn starting its own audio network, or it can easily latch on wirelessly to an existing Sonos setup. About the size of a tissue box, the Play:1 is great for bookcases, bedside tables, and kitchen countertops. And it connects to the Sonos smartphone and desktop apps for streaming from just about any audio source. At $199, Sonos' least expensive speaker makes for a great first step into a dependable wireless audio network.
