SAFFiR stands for Shipboard Autonomous Firefighting Robot, which gives you a good idea of what the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory wants it for. This robotic firefighter is built sturdy enough to carry heavy items such as PEAT grenades, fire extinguishers and a sizable battery, thanks in no small part to the titanium springs in its knees. Another thing that could come in handy during rescues: stereo infrared vision for seeing through heavy smoke.
Pros: Built tough like a robot action hero.
Cons: Only half-finished at this point.
