Nick Fury and the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have a pretty sweet ride — a giant flying aircraft carrier called, logically enough, the helicarrier. Aside from the fact that it can turn invisible, the idea of a giant floating ship doesn’t sound too improbable. Well, it didn’t before Rhett Allain, associate professor of physics at Southeastern Louisiana University, ripped apart the idea in Wired. His conclusion? Lifting something that weighs as much as an aircraft carrier (around 104,000 tons) would take four rotors that would each have to be bigger than the aircraft itself. Hopefully Nick Fury has a lot of frequent flyer miles.
