Arriving just after Thanksgiving, Far Cry 3 brings this open-world shooter series full circle by staging it on — drum roll! — another remote albeit gloriously rendered jungle island. But Far Cry 3‘s other shoe-drop involves its emphasis on more nuanced combat and stealth mechanics (presumably to head off accusations it’s another neat-o breakable trees, bendable foliage and “god rays” game engine ad). The otherwise wonderful Far Cry 2‘s biggest failing was its out-of-control checkpoint re-spawns, which train-wrecked any sense of map progress. Hopefully Assassin’s Creed developer Ubisoft Montreal has the “minimize nonsense re-spawns” box checked this time around.
