When entrepreneur Dalton Caldwell grew frustrated with Twitter’s increasingly commercialized feel and new policy of discouraging third-party apps, he didn’t just stew. He created a service called App.net, with a cozy feel reminiscent of Twitter in its earliest days. It’s mostly a paid service — although paying members can give free-account invites to friends — which helps keep the quality of the conversation high. And there are dozens of third-party tools for using it on phones, browsers and computers.
