Chrono Trigger inducted battalions of computer-less tweens to console roleplaying when it arrived on the Super Nintendo in 1995 (tweens who went on to become New Geeks and reminisce about the game worshipfully, for better or worse).
Chrono Trigger‘s epic time-hopping story was pretty ridiculous and its combat system – cribbed from Final Fantasy IV – was arguably second-rate, but the music (mostly by esteemed Japanese composer Yasunori Mitsuda) was memorable and the plot twists gonzo enough to keep players’ curiosity piqued for the several dozen hours it took to complete, despite frequent snips of silly dialogue like: “They call me Gato, I have metal joints. If you beat me up, you’ll earn 15 points.”
